Winterwonderland
The very cold weather of late November continued for the first few days in December, with frequent snow showers. December 2010 was the coldest one in 100 years, with snow falling in most areas of the UK and with temperatures quite regularly falling to between -10 and -20 °C overnight. Most areas saw 20 to 30cm deep, even on low ground. Meanwhile, upland areas as the North Yorkshire Moors also saw up to 50cm and more of snow. This combination of sustained low temperatures and frequent snowfalls affected everyday life in most parts of the UK for much of the month. The emergency services, local authorities, transport organisations and utilities were put under great pressure. Travel disruption and school closures continued, including the extended closure of Gatwick and Edinburgh airports. Although it has been very cold and snowy it has also been relatively sunny and dry. We have been told that sunshine hours were 39% above normal, with an average of 53 hours recorded for the UK, making it the third sunniest in the series that goes back to 1929!
More snow mainly over night - but we STILL can go for our usual (?) walk to "Peter's" (just around the corner) ...
... we promise you for the New Year that we dig out the guest-units from the snow so that they can be used frequently! We are looking forward to your visit! Until then we wish you - and us - not tooooooooooooo much snow anymore!!!! |
