"News and a little bit of cultur"

End of august 2005: Switzerland sinks in a flood disaster!"

It was exactly the right time for my parents to leave Switzerland for a visit here in Whitethorn. They did spend a whole week and because of the fine weather, that we have had here, we could do a lot of sight-seeing.
We have have driven through the moors, through Hutton-Le-Hole, Rosedale, Lealholm and to the beach to Scarborough and Whitby (with Whitby Abbey, set high on a cliff top, it remains overlook a picturesque town and harbour with associations as diverse as Victorian jewellery and Count Dracula). We visited Helmsley, drove down Sutton Bank to Thirsk and back up to Rievaulx Abbey.

Rievaulx Abbey - the name Rievaulx comes from a Franco-Norman word meaning 'valley of the Rye". The monastery's third abbot, St Aelred, wrote over eight centuries ago:
"Everywhere peace, everywhere serenity, and a marvellous freedom from the tumult of the world."
Although much of what was built by the monks is in ruins, you can still find peace, freedom and serenity - even with the tourists!

There is much more that we have seen all these days, for example the lovely day trip to the Lake District - including the tasteful lunch at "Wordsworth Hotel" in Grasmere, and, and, and ...

It was very nice - and who knows, perhaps a next time?
